The book begins with two main characters who have experienced devastating circumstances, one has just lost everything and the other is recovering from a serious medical condition. The author skillfully intertwines the lives of these two women who have never met and they become so dependent upon each other. I was immediately interested in the story and came to love the zany cast of characters who are introduced throughout the book. Several themes are abundant in the story – faith, friends and family but they are wrought with challenges and difficult relationships. While there is love and attraction this is more than a romance novel, it's about friendship, following dreams and trusting God when life is difficult.

The characters live in a quiet neighborhood in an idyllic small town setting with a rich history and strong sense of community. It's like a typical community in Northern Wisconsin. The author's vivid descriptions create a colorful picture so much so that I feel like I'm watching a movie on the Hallmark channel.
I enjoyed reading this book so much that I stayed up late into the evening because I just had to get to the end. The story was well paced and had a satisfying ending but I found that I like the characters so much that I want to know more of their individual stories. I don't want to give any spoilers but the characters have experienced circumstances such as loss of a spouse, divorce, neglect and disability. I think this would make a great series of books so the author could delve more deeply into the circumstances of each of these characters and offer hope for those who struggle with similar difficulties or challenges. Despite the struggles there were times that I found myself laughing out loud at something a character said or did. Reading this book gave me a better sense of hopefulness and was a good reminder to me that we all have our own struggles in life but the relationships and love that we have for each other and for God will see us through and we are never truly alone. There were moments of laughter, with a bit of sadness but there was also the happily ever after which actually brought tears to my eyes. I hope to see more stories like this one from Kathryn Springer, I think it is her best one yet!

Engaging story with memorable characters

There is a place for everyone across generations, abilities and life stories in Kathryn Springer's The Gathering Table. Characters spring to life with spot on descriptions - their stories weave together to create a tale of hope and saving grace amongst the hurt and fears of life.   Creating good food and life giving spaces bring joy and healing  to many in Winsome Lake. You will laugh, be encouraged and just LOVE reading this book!!  I received an advance copy of this book and was not asked to post a positive review.

A GREAT encouraging read!

Welcome to Winsome Lake, Wisconsin, a place where everyone knows one another, and all are family.
Twenty five years ago Elaine Haviland bought her home, and moved in, a new comer, and she still considers herself as a newbie, and she repeats history by hiring Jessica without ever meeting her. Mistakes? No, you are about to enter a very heartwarming read, where strangers become family.
We are with Jes as she arrives to the empty home, well, maybe not empty as there is a constant stream of strangers, at least to her. Elaine is in rehab. Can you imagine thinking your alone, and being awakened by someone playing the piano?
Come and see how this family developes, and we come to see the parallel of lives through the generations. A sweet story that you won't want to end!

Family

This is such a delightful town, this Winsome Lake, Wisconsin.  When Jessica Keaton, a chef fired from her job, comes to work for Elaine Haviland as a housekeeper, she is quite unprepared for the town and its inhabitants.  She discovers she's gotten more than a job.  She finds a town full of people are just what she did not know she needed.  

Warmly written and deeply felt, this one will be remembered long after the last page.
