Lady Sybil Douglas, part of the notorious clan Douglas, has been abandoned to fend for herself. Her brothers are scoundrels who have used their sisters as pawns for their gain have fled for France after falling from grace with the Queen (who happens to be her brother's—Archie—wife). Sybil's life at court is in turmoil. She needs to escape Scotland but is not sure how.

Her rescue comes in the form of a hulking highland warrior, Rory Mackenzie. Rory has traveled to claim his betrothed and is in a hurry to get back to the Highlands. Their uncle Hector is evil and wants the position for himself.
