"MK McClintock has spun an enchanting tale deeply entrenched in the lands of Scotland and England that will leave you riveted to your chair until you turn the last page." - My Life, One Story at a Time
In the author's words . . .
I carry a lot of memories with me, but none are so vividly recalled as the time I spent in Scotland. The moment my feet touched Highland soil, the most profound peace washed over me. You hear the many stories of how much people love Scotland, and how much they felt they belonged, and there is likely truth to every story. There is something magical about that land, and even in our modern day, there is history buried so deep that the earth carries within it the hearts, souls, blood, and tears of all those who came before. The time I spent writing Blackwood Crossing gave me an opportunity to relive that magic and imagine what it must have been like for those long ago.

“Patrick has changed our destination.” Charles leaned up against the doorframe.
“These doors aren’t much for privacy.” Tristan stood and set his book on the chair. He motioned for Charles to follow him a few paces away. “Where?”
“Inverness.”
“Patrick’s coming with us to Crawford’s? We expected he might.”
Charles nodded. “Apparently the situation has worsened, but he gave no details. Crawford is quite obviously not the man we believe he is.”
Tristan glanced at Rhona’s door. “I spoke with her earlier as you’d asked, but I can’t help but feel sorry for her. She’s unhappy.”
Charles smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “She was always difficult to unravel, but you’re right. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything about it until she asks for help.”
“Arranged marriages aren’t as common as they once were. A woman with her strength . . . what reason would she have to go through with it?”
“I’ve been asking myself the same thing since I saw her again, and I’d wager it has something to do with Wallace.” Charles stood straight. “I’d hoped to speak with her privately.”
“If our mission included your resolving your differences with the lady, then I would gladly suggest we delay, but as things stand, it is better to let her go.”
“If it was Alaina on the other side of the door, under similar circumstances, would you walk away?”
Tristan lifted the book from his chair and sat down. “We still have a mission to carry out.” Tristan handed the book to Charles. “You can take over the watch. And Charles? When this is over, you know I’ll support whatever you decide to do, but right now—”
“Mission first.” Charles’s gaze swept over the door to Rhona’s room. “Have you thought about leaving again? Making retirement permanent, never to return for any reason?”
Tristan nodded. “But we all know that retirement would never be permanent. We’ve both tried it. They’ve invested too much into us.” Tristan set a heavy hand on his friend’s shoulder. “If caring about her doesn’t hurt anyone, do not let the work stop you.”
Charles looked directly at Tristan but said nothing.
Tristan stepped back. “Unless there’s something we don’t know.”
“There’s plenty I haven’t told you or Devon, and I did not think any of it would be a problem.”
“Why is it now?”
Charles shook his head. “I don’t know exactly, but something about Rhona’s behavior when she came to see me. There’s more to this marriage than what she or her father revealed.”
“We have three days before we meet Patrick. If you haven’t learned the truth—”
“Then I have to let her go.”
Tristan nodded. “Will you?”
Charles pressed his hand against the closed portal, his silence answer enough.
