The Wicked Cries Wolf

In the shadow of Alaska’s Chugach Mountains, a darkness lurks and threatens a quiet coastal village in The Wicked Cries Wolf, the third stand-alone book in the Kyndall Family Thriller series.

A woman desperate for solitude. A man with an enemy he can’t see. A dangerous game neither wants to play.

International bestselling author Meaghan Ryers has gained wealth, success, and fame . . . and all she wants is to be left alone. When her sister suggests she escape to someplace quiet where no one will find her, Meaghan picks a spot on the map and heads for Alaska.

Sheriff Donovan Kyndall of Stewart’s Crossing, Alaska, arrives at the scene of a car fire after receiving a mysterious call. He doesn’t expect a woman from out of town to be at the scene, begging him to believe someone was killed. As clues into the fire emerge, Donovan has to ask himself how she’s connected and how a caller knows details from his own tragic past.

As the truth is revealed, Donovan and Meaghan are entangled in a puzzle of lies, treachery, and clues they must decode if they are to outlast their enemy.

In the author's words . . .

It is always a pleasure and a gift to revisit old friends, and coming together again with the Kyndall family was a lot of fun. They never fail to take me on a wild ride or send my mind through a maze of puzzles and clues that even I have trouble figuring out. Donovan and Meaghan have easy-going personalities that I've always envied, and it was nice to learn a few things from them. I hope you enjoy their exciting adventure of suspense as much as I have.

“WOW, what a read! The plot was intense, powerful and thrilling and held me captive all the way through! The characters fairly leaped off the page, and the tension was palpable. If you are looking for a book that you just CAN’T put down, then this is DEFINITELY the book for you!” —BookBub review on The Wicked Cries Wolf

“Jack Jones. Sounds like a good character name. I hope to keep a low profile while I’m here. I have a book to finish in two months.”

“That could be difficult if what you witnessed turns into more than an arson investigation.”

Meaghan set her mug down and crossed her arms over her chest. Even at five-foot-nine in her bare feet, Donovan towered over her. “That’s the other reason you came here today.”

“You are good at this. If you ever tire of writing, you should consider law enforcement.”

“I like my day job, thank you.” Meaghan wanted to tell him to leave. No, she wanted to go back five minutes before the conversation turned from their light banter. For the first time in years, she’d found herself attracted to a handsome, intelligent man, who cared neither about her fame or money. Reality had a sneaky way of ruining life, which is why Meaghan preferred fiction. “Sheriff Kyndall—”

“It’s only fair for you to call me Donovan, since you’ve served me excellent coffee in your kitchen.”

“Not my kitchen.”

He drank from the mug and set it near hers on the marble counter. “Semantics. I imagine those are important to a writer.”

Dang, she thought, he was good, too. Better than good. Smooth and sneaky, without missing a step, he led the conversation exactly where he wanted, and she’d followed. He could lead her down a rabbit hole if she wasn’t careful. “And to a sheriff investigating arson—or murder?”

“Yes, to both. What do you remember about the voice you heard? Young or old? Male or female?”

“I told you it was a woman.” Meaghan shook her head. She wasn’t sure of anything now. “Young or old, I can’t be sure. I’d say she sounded my age, but that doesn’t mean much when it comes to adult voices. She could have been anywhere from twenty to fifty. Definitely not too young. You didn’t find anything on your second pass, did you?”

Donovan removed his small notebook from his back pocket. “I’ve asked a friend to come down and check the area. He’s an expert tracker, who often works with law enforcement, so he might find something we missed.”

“You didn’t answer the question.” Meaghan wouldn’t back down, even when Donovan’s scrutinizing eyes met hers.

“How about that.”

“Sorry, uncalled for.” Meaghan stared at him, feeling close to defeated now. She should have gone somewhere tropical, extended her deadline, and found a quiet beach to sleep on for a month. “You don’t owe me an explanation for anything.”

He tucked the closed notebook back into his pocket and brace his strong, tanned hands in front of him on the marble. “No, I don’t. I’m not in the habit of sharing details of an investigation with civilians. However, you are the only witness, so I imagine that line will get blurry.”

A rush of adrenaline perked Meaghan up. She walked around the counter and stood almost toe to toe with Donovan. He smelled like the outdoors, earthy and masculine. “Get blurry? Meaning you’re still investigating and not just the arson because, otherwise, you’d no longer need information from me. You found something.”

"The author starts the story with a bang, literally, as Meaghan, our lead witnesses an accident. Or was it murder? The author paces the tale beautifully as Meaghan and Donovan try to figure who is targeting them. On a side note, I loved the beautiful naturistic landscape of Alaska where the story takes place. Also Skye is just adorable!" —Rajiv's Reviews on The Wicked Cries Wolf
